How to prevent windscreen cracks from spreading

windscreen crack

Windscreen cracks or chips are incredibly common occurrences, and more often than not they are easily fixed. However, if not fixed immediately, a crack can spread over the surface of your windscreen which can make the damage worse. Windscreen cracks that spread have an entirely different approach to fixing them as they will likely require professional assistance. Here are some things that you can do to try and prevent this from happening.

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight

Sunlight is one of the biggest causes of windscreen cracks spreading. If possible, try to avoid parking in direct sunlight. Heat can quickly increase the temperature inside your car whilst it’s parked, which pumps up the pressure on your windscreen. Because glass expands in hot weather and contracts when it gets cold, if your car is exposed to sudden temperature changes, there’s a high chance the crack in your windscreen will spread.

Purchase a windscreen repair kit

If you have to fix the damage yourself, a temporary fix can be achieved with a windscreen repair kit. While these can buy you some time before you get the windscreen damage professionally looked at, it’s important not to rely on them for a permanent fix.

Avoid driving over bumps

One of the most common places for chip damage on windscreen to occur is over bumps and potholes. If you have a car with a windscreen that’s been cracked, avoid driving over this area as the damage can spread if you do. In fact, if you do have a windscreen crack, it’s best to avoid driving at all until it is fixed.

Pay attention to weather reports

If there is a chance of rain in your area, try to take your car to the mechanic before this happens. Vehicles that are exposed to sudden changes in the weather are more likely to develop cracks, which can lead to a cracked windscreen spreading if you’re not careful.

Seek professional help as soon as you can

If you find that the chip or crack in your windscreen is spreading, it’s probably a good idea to take it to a professional and get it fixed as soon as you can. This will be more expensive than a temporary fix, but if you are able to prevent the spread of the chip/crack then you could save yourself from having to replace your windscreen altogether.
