Maintaining your windscreen and windscreens wipers is one of the key factors to reducing cracks or long-term damage. It also can aid in visibility and safety whilst driving. However not everybody knows the best way to do this, and what products and techniques you should be using.
Wipers and fluid
The first step of windscreen maintenance is actually maintaining your windscreen wipers. If these aren’t in proper condition you risk leaving marks on your windscreen and even causing permanent damage. Since your wipers are exposed to all weather conditions, they need to be replaced and cleaned more often than you think. If you’re noticing that your wipers are leaving marks, squeaking loudly, or not getting rid of rain as well as you would like- it’s probably time to get them replaced.
Windscreen wiper fluid is also a key aspect of maintenance. Make sure you’re checking your fluid levels regularly. If not, you could find yourself stuck in a situation with a dirty windscreen, low visibility, and no fluid to clean it. It’s also very important that you don’t try and use the washer function while it is empty. This can damage the pump and end up with it needing to be replaced.
When filling the windscreen washer, you should use specific windscreen shampoo. This can be purchased from your local automotive store. Otherwise, you can use water if you’re in a pinch-but this won’t produce the same effect. We recommend using a wiper fluid to get a streak free clean and crystal clear visibility.
Cracks
You may be tempted to put off fixing a small crack or chip in your windscreen. This is not only dangerous, but against the law. If significant issues are left unattended, they can cause much more pronounced cracks and even require an entire windscreen replacement. Something as small as a bump in the road can cause a miniscule crack in your windscreen to shatter, which is extremely dangerous. If you notice any damage at all to your windscreen you should get it looked at immediately by a professional.
If you find a small crack and can’t get to a professional ASAP, you can use superglue or clear nail polish with some tape to get you through. Apply the glue or polish, allow it to dry, and place a clear piece of tape over the area. This will prevent the crack from spreading until you can see a professional. However, this should not be used for longer than 24 hours as it is not a permanent fix.
