How to protect your newly repaired windscreen

protect your newly repaired windscreen

When you’ve just had your windscreen replaced, you want to make sure that it’s well maintained to prevent another costly repair. Windscreens play an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of your car, as well as protecting you and your passengers in the event of an accident. That’ why you want to look after it properly.

The first few hours following a replacement are usually the most critical. It’s important you keep it in good condition so that it lasts as long as possible.

So here are a few tips on how to protect your newly repaired windscreen

Leave the windows slightly open

Extreme temperatures can cause unnecessary pressure around the seal as it dries. To avoid any leaks, make sure that you crack your window open for 24 hours following the replacement. You don’t have to have your window fully open – a 2-centimetre gap should suffice.

Wait to drive your vehicle

When your windscreen is replaced, we use a certain type of adhesive to bind the glass to the car. If you decide to drive your car around following a replacement, it may cause the adhesive to move around and not seal properly. Instead of jumping straight into your car, just sit back for two hours and wait for the glue to harden.

Keep the area around your windscreen clear

While the seal is drying, you should make sure that no objects are pushing up against it. Keep your dashboard area free of clutter, and avoid using your sunshade in the meantime. Also make sure that your car is parked in a clear area where nothing can accidentally touch your windscreen.

Drive slowly over speed bumps

You’ll want to go easy on the new windscreen after the installation. That means avoid driving over any potholes on the road. When you come face to face with a speed bump, slow down and drive carefully so that it doesn’t affect the seal and lead to leaks.

Avoid car washes

To ensure the new seal does not get damaged or shift, avoid car washes. If your car is really dirty and you can’t wait that long, then opt for a regular hand wash instead.

Check your windscreen wipers

We often forget about the importance of good windscreen wipers, until we’re stuck on the road while there’s a storm pouring down on us. But did you know that damaged windscreen wipers can also cause harm to your windscreen? If the rubber on your wipers is worn down, it will cause the metal to directly hit the glass, in-turn scratching it. If you suspect that your windshield wipers are in poor condition, make sure you replace them after you’ve tended to your windscreen.

So there you go! With these tips, you’ll know exactly how to protect your newly repaired windscreen.
